Clothing for the Elderly & Disabled

Patients who have physically debilitating conditions or the elderly usually do not have the needed motor skills to have the ability to dress with regular clothing options that we usually buy in shopping malls. For example, buttoning a shirt can be a tiring task for them, or maybe putting on pants and tying their shoelaces. It can be very challenging that can add to their stress.

Choosing Adaptive Clothing

There are a couple of factors to consider when choosing adaptive clothing for the elderly and physically challenged individuals. Make sure that you choose adaptive clothing made with fabrics that can be washed frequently and would still look good on them. Opt for fabrics that can resist shrinkage even if you wash it every day like polyester or can be a combination of cotton and polyester.

If you prefer a cotton garment, it should be 50% polyester and 50% cotton. It can also be 65% polyester and 35% cotton combinations. These clothes usually do not require ironing and can stand the test of time even if you wash them regularly because they have a very low shrinkage factor. For the wheelchair clothing, it should have less than 30% rayon, wool, linen, or silk content to make sure that it remains in good condition. This will also ensure that it will not shrink easily.

Limited mobility should not affect your loved one’s options when it comes to their clothes. There is now plenty of Adaptive Clothing for the Elderly & Disabled available that are specifically designed for them, even for wheelchair dressing.
